This page has some advice to help you use your health insurance to stay well and get the healthcare you need.

Getting Ready for Your Doctor’s Visit

After you choose your health plan and your doctor, call your doctor to schedule a checkup. A checkup is a free visit to the doctor to make sure you are healthy.

Bring your photo ID, medical card, health plan member ID, and any medicine you are taking.

If you need help with transportation, call your health plan.

It’s a good idea to prepare for your first doctor visit. Good questions to ask are:

-Do I need to fill anything out before I come?

-Do I need to bring my medication?

-What do I need to do if I have to cancel?

During Your Doctor’s Visit

Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor questions about your health and feel free to take notes during your visits.

Here are some questions you may want to ask your doctor:

-How can I improve my health?

-What do I need to do after I leave?

-Why is it important for me to do what you are recommending?

-Do I need to come back for a follow-up visit?

After Your Visit

Your doctor may want you to take certain medicine that needs a prescription. You will have to pick up the medicine at a pharmacy. Remember to bring your prescription, health plan member ID card, and photo ID.

Your doctor may give you a prescription you have to fill regularly. This is called a refill. When you get your prescription at the pharmacy, it will come with instructions. Don’t be afraid to ask the pharmacist questions about how to take your medicine and how often to get it refilled.

How your health plan and PCP can help you stay healthy

You can get many services you need to stay healthy from your health plan.

This includes:

  • Help getting rides to doctor appointments.
  • Getting prescriptions filled.
  • Finding services that you or your family may need.

You may need referrals, or approval, from your doctor for some services or medicine.
